“Follow the Drinkin’ Gourd” SATB arr. by Peter Frost
From: $45.00
Follow the Drinkin’ Gourd was first published in 1928. It is believed to be a map song of the Underground Railroad. This Railroad served to help the American enslaved peoples to escape to freedom. This network of secret routes began in the early to mid-19th century and continued until the Civil War. It is believed that Peg Leg Joe was a famous conductor on this pathway, and the drinking gourd was a water dipper made out of a gourd. Some believe that this ladle would often be hung next to the entry door to tell the passengers on the railway that this house was safe, and that it could shelter them. The drinking gourd also bore the shape of the big dipper which contains Polaris, the North Star. The North Star helped guide the slaves to freedom.
